  • Your name or business name, address and contact details
  • The customer’s name (or business name) and address
  • A clear description of what you are charging for
  • The date the goods or services were supplied
  • The date of the invoice

Worth adding for hairdressers and beauty therapists

  • The date of the appointment or event
  • Each treatment or person as its own line
  • Any deposit paid, taken off the total

Tips to get paid faster

  • Take a deposit for events and show it on the invoice.
  • Add travel as a line for mobile work, so the customer sees it.
  • Keep your product and equipment receipts: they are expenses for your tax return.

Business customers who pay late may owe you statutory interest of 8% above the Bank of England base rate, plus a fixed sum of £40, £70 or £100 depending on the size of the debt. This does not apply to private individuals.

With a free account you can connect Stripe, and every invoice gets a “Pay online” link and QR code, so customers can pay by card or Apple Pay straight away.

Frequently asked questions

Should I take a deposit for weddings?

Many do. Agree the amount and whether it is refundable in writing, then show it on the final invoice.

Can I charge for travel?

Yes, if you agreed it with the customer. Show it as its own line.

Do I need an invoice for walk-in customers?

Not usually, a receipt is enough if they ask. Invoices are useful for events, businesses and anyone paying later.

Is the invoice template really free?

Yes. You can start an invoice straight away without an account. To download it as a PDF, email it or keep it, you create a free TaxEase UK account, which includes 5 invoices a month and card payments through Stripe.
